Try out VoIP software The NetBSD Project
Status: Closed Time to complete: 48 hrs Mentors: Aleksej Saushev, Julian Coleman, Julian Fagir Tags: service, ui

There is much VoIP software in pkgsrc, but which one works best vor NetBSD, which one provides the best features?  Looking at VoIP software that uses the SIP protocol, create a comprehensive list of these, and report what does and what does not work with them.

You may find the pkgsrc site at http://pkgsrc.se/ useful for browsing pkgsrc, or also searching Google for SIP VoIP software that runs on free OS's (check that the software that you found is in pkgsrc).

To avoid a completely empty comment, is Skype considered one of the VoIP applications?

Aleksej Saushev on November 27 2012 06:48 UTC Skype

Skype is definitly VoIP software, but it is not our oversight that it isn't mentioned.

It is omitted for a number of reasons (you may need to get very old distribution file, some subtle tinkering, perhaps even kernel hacking).

It is better to focus on SIP and/or Jingle/XMPP.

1. Please, provide reports in a format that is easy to handle. Plain text, HTML. RTF is not easy to process.

2. "Try out" means that you should try software out. Composing a mere list of software is useless, we have it already.

Aleksej Saushev on January 10 2013 20:45 UTC Progress?

Hi!

Have you managed to do make any progress? Please, report. It may be fine to provide incomplete report (e.g. covering one package). Negative result is accepted here, just describe problem well enough to make a good problem report.

Vijay Nandwani on January 11 2013 19:17 UTC Which service to test?

Is there any particular service which I should test? I mean I had used Google Chat to test the XMPP protocol; which service can I use to test the SIP protocol?

Thanks :)

Please, use standard archivers/compressors to communicate (zip or tar+gzip/bzip2). Using something exotic is not helpful.

I was told on IRC that contents of zip and 7-zip archives is identical.

1. Please, provide error reports as textual files rather than screenshots. All your graphical files contain purely textual information from shell.

2. Try finding some free SIP provider. Quick search reveals that there're at least four options available (sipgate.de, placetel.de, sip2sip.info, freecall.com), though I didn't check any.

Vijay Nandwani on January 12 2013 13:40 UTC New Submission

Okay I have submitted a newer version.

1)  I produced all the error once again in my VMware player and then copied and sent a mail to my email. I then copied the mail(actually chat message) in my host machine and pasted it in the file. SO now all the file contains all the error messages

2) I tested it with four providers but still it wasn't working. I have added its report too.

The file to be reviewed is - Testing_VoIP_Clients_new.zip

Thanks :)
