The task is to create a 30-60 second video to promote OI Flashlight. The video shall enhance the experience for the OI Flashlight Market description. You have all artistic freedom in creating the video. The video can be based on real life situations in which the application is used on a real Android device (e.g. in a dark room). The video can also be based on emulator screencasts. It can either showcase the great diversity of features, or tell a captivating story.
Your solution should be a link to your YouTube video. The video format should be high-resolution (1280x720, YouTube HD Video). All third party content used (images, background music, sound effects, ...) must be available by an open license without fees (freeware or creative commons license). The origin of contents must be mentioned in the description of the video and/or in the credits.
IMPORTANT: Before you start, get early in touch with OpenIntents developers to discuss your concept. Optionally you may send early drafts of your concept or previous video work. If you do not present your concept at an early stage, OpenIntents reserves the right not to accept your final video entry.
- Difficulty: medium
- Time limit: 21 days
- Optional prerequisites: Download the Android SDK (instructions)
- Requirements for completed entry:
- IMPORTANT: Discuss your concept idea early with OpenIntents. OpenIntents reserves the right to refuse an entry if the concept has not been discussed previously.
- Send a link to a 30-60 second YouTube video.

Since I was interested in this task, I went and downloaded your app on my Samsung Epic 4G and it starting glitching out -- the screen was flickering and the frame rate seemed to be off. Just wondering if that is going to be fixed any time soon?
So far we are not aware of this issue, but it is also difficult to test without the device. If you could describe the problem in more detail, including your device and Android version information, you could create an issue report at http://code.google.com/p/openintents/issues/list and link to your issue here. However, this will take time to be fixed.
I would like to work on this task.
Hello passstab,
I've assigned this task to you. Please get in touch with the rest of OI developers on the mailing list and discuss your ideas for the video. Remember that if you do not discuss you might end up with your video rejected. Good luck!
This task has been assigned to passstab. You have 504 hours to complete this task, good luck!
The claim on this task has been removed, someone else can claim it now.
I would like to work on this task.
Just as a side note even after google-code in ends, my team and I would be more than happy to continue to create videos for your organiztion.
This task has been assigned to Billy. You have 504 hours to complete this task, good luck!
Do you have access to the latest version in the trunk? It supports the hardware camera flash, but has not been released to Market yet.
If not, we can try to release a beta version.
And yes, we'd be delighted to see more videos from you even after GCI ends :-)
Our idea for the video is as follows:
A flying shark approaches. The main character runs from the shark and evenually shows light from OI Flashlight causing theshark to go away.
I've published version 1.1 of OI Flashlight to Market. It may take a while until the update appears.
Unfortunately, the camera flash did not work on all devices we tested, so let us know if you have problems with it.
Here is a variation (which you may or may not use):
When the car breaks down, and the person gets out, the doors close automatically and lock themselves. He wants to open the doors again, but drops the keys in the dark, leading to more panick, because he can't find the keys on the floor. Then the flying shark appears and there is the thrilling chase you envision, through the woods and back to the car - he still can't find the keys and can not enter the car, but the shark gets dangerously close. When the person finally turns on OI Flashlight, he sees that the flying shark was actually just a plastic bag hanging in a tree, and with the help of the flashlight, he also finds the keys to open the car. Sighing in relief "Oh... " with still trembling voice ".. I .." realizing what saved his life and looking at his "Flashlight".
The work on this task is ready to be reviewed.
The video sets a dark mood, which is good.
I just wonder - the first time I watched the video I could not see any shark at all. Maybe my screen is not good enough, but I wonder if you could improve the contrast digitally slightly so that one can at least recognize that there is a shark?
Also the sound that one hears when one should see the shark for the first time does not help in recognizing it (is it some jacket from the person who holds the camera?). That could be removed. But I don't know which sound a flying shark would make...
One of the mentors has sent this task back for more work. Talk to the mentor(s) assigned to this task to satisfy the requirements needed to complete this task, submit your work again and mark the task as complete once you re-submit your work.

Thank you for your videos :-) And thanks for the bloopers ;-)
Congratulations, this task has been completed successfully.
Hello,
After receiving the notification of completion for this video I tried finding more video tasks and was unable to find any! If there are any more I would appreciate a link to the tasks. (I'm planning on trying to get one tonight [as of right now we're planning out OI Safe] and hopefully another tomorrow. However in the unfortuante case that I can't finish them in time and for the sake of making other videos in the future for you, may I have an email address to contact you?)
Thanks,
Billy
Have a look at issue 499:
http://code.google.com/p/openintents/issues/detail?id=499
This may be exactly what you were looking for :-) Claim an issue task - medium or hard, depending on how involved you think the video will be.
You can contact me through the developer forum or at peli0101@gmail.com .
The task would probably be either medium/hard depending on how our plot develops. That's the type of thing I'm looking for but since it doesn't appear to be running through the same GUI as the other tasks, I havent been able to find a "Claim this Task!" button. (The strange thing is that a few weeks ago I remember seeing a Promotion video for OI safe task on the main google code-in site "http://www.google-melange.com/gci/tasks/google/gci2011" but now it appears to be gone...)
It is the same GUI, just claim an "Fix an issue (medium)" or "Fix an issue (hard)" task, and link to the issue I linked to above.
The OI Safe task has been completed by another student:
http://www.google-melange.com/gci/task/view/google/gci2011/7130308
http://code.google.com/p/openintents/wiki/PromotionVideos#OI_Safe
There was yet another video task:
http://www.google-melange.com/gci/task/view/google/gci2011/7232283
http://code.google.com/p/openintents/wiki/PromotionVideos#OI_Countdown
but those are gone. Since we can't add new tasks in the second half of GCI, you have to use one of the existing tasks, but the "Fix an issue" task is quite versatile :-)
